{ I actually do not have a photo of myself with the sculpture itself unfortunately as I was busy packing up as we finished, I am so sorry :( But here is an in depth photo of the whale I made! Took a lot of time <3 }
{ Explanation of the Art Piece }
Using e-waste, our class crafted a 6-foot-tall whale. It stands head on the ground. The top part of the art, the tail of the whale, is covered in broken CDs, creating a beautiful mosaic. This represents our human view of the pollution in the ocean that we cause. We can acknowledge it as trash, but still, we see it as shiny and pretty, as if it's not all that bad because the ocean is still pretty beautiful. However, when we dive deeper, we see the torso and head of the whale engulfed in garbage. Unpleasant, harmful mounds of trash. This represents the reality of the damage and hurt we are causing to our marine life. It reflects how the deeper we look into things, the more we see the truth—the consequences of our actions. After creating this piece, we had so much e-waste and crafted materials left over. Our class saw this as a reflection of our eagerness and passion for this project. We each gave 110%. So, we took that extra 10% and made a second piece of art. The second piece shows a dolphin made out of keycaps, jumping out of a microwave filled with "water." This represents us humans warming the temperatures of the ocean, harming our marine life. Another detail we added to this piece: when you look under the "water," you see more waste, once again representing that the deeper we dive, the more damage we find we have caused.
